Some of the recent movies I’ve enjoyed (or not)

  • Movies: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker by J.J. Abrams 3 stars. Entertaining enough, but it undid a lot of the potential of The Last Jedi with a rushed storyline and a mixed payoff.
  • Movies: Spider-Man: Far from Home by Jon Watts 4 stars. A great epilogue to Avengers: Endgame, and a fun story in its own right.
  • Movies: Avengers: Endgame by Joe & Anthony Russo 5 stars. Wow. There may be small flaws, but this is a near-perfect capstone to the LARGEST movie series ever.
  • Movies: Captain Marvel by Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck 5 stars. Funny, action-packed, & well-written. I hope this encourages studios to promote even more female superheroines.
  • Movies: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part by Mike Mitchell 4 stars. Not quite as good as the first, but a lot of fun nonetheless with great music.
  • Movies: Sorry to Bother You by Boots Riley 4 stars. This weird, funny, intelligent story is a critique of modern society.
  • Movies: I Kill Giants by Anders Walter 5 stars. Wow. This was absolutely magical!
  • Movies: Rampage by Brad Peyton 2 stars. Without the Rock, this movie would barely even rate as a B-movie. It was ... fine.
  • Movies: Venom by Ruben Fleischer 2 stars. Tom Hardy does a fine job playing two very different roles. The rest of the movie: eh.
  • Movies: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets by Luc Besson 2 stars. It was a mildly entertaining sci-fi flick with a couple interesting ideas.
  • Movies: Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg 4 stars. I was prepared to dislike this because so much had been changed from the book, but it was really fun and entertaining.
  • Movies: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, & Rodney Rothman 5 stars. WOW. This movie completely nails everything. The animation style is beautiful, unique, and groundbreaking.
  • Movies: Game Night by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein 4 stars. Hilarious, with a great cast, rich story, and unexpected twists and turns
  • Movies: Pacific Rim: Uprising by Steven S. DeKnight 3 stars. Fun story, great action, and more of the robots on kaiju action from the original
  • Movies: Downsizing by Alexander Payne 3 stars. Funny at times, thoughtful at times, with a kind of weird take on futurism
  • Movies: Deadpool 2 by David Leitch 4 stars. Funny, profane, and violent in all the best ways that only Deadpool can be
  • Movies: Ocean’s 8 by Gary Ross 4 stars. A fun heist movie with a fantastic cast
  • Movies: Tomb Raider (2018) by Roar Uthaug 3 stars. It wasn't awful and mildly entertained me for a couple hours.
  • Movies: The Greatest Showman by Michael Gracey 5 stars. Loved the visuals, the music, and the story
  • Movies: Incredibles 2 by Brad Bird 4 stars. A really great sequel to one of my favorite Pixar movies.
  • Movies: Solo by Ron Howard 3 stars. On rewatching, I enjoyed this quite a bit more. I still wish I could have seen what the original directors envisioned.
  • Movies: Avengers: Infinity War by Anthony & Joe Russo 5 stars. This movie was WAY better than it should have been with the number of characters in it. Sucks you in and keeps going.
  • Movies: Justice League by Zack Snyder 1 stars. I really do not understand why DC continues to trust their characters with Zack Snyder. Not a good movie.
  • Movies: Black Panther by Ryan Coogler 5 stars. Marvel movies feel like they are continuously getting better overall, and this was no exception.
  • Movies: Coco by Lee Unkrich & Adrian Molina 5 stars. Pixar was firing on all cylinders for this movie. Beautiful, inspiring, emotional.
  • Movies: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle by Jake Kasdan 4 stars. Way more entertaining than it had a right to be. Very different from the original, but so much fun.
  • Movies: Star Wars: The Last Jedi by Rian Johnson 4 stars. While the pacing and story were a bit odd at times, Rian Johnson opened up a new world of possibilities in Star Wars.
  • Movies: Thor: Ragnarok by Taika Waititi 5 stars. I loved the spectacle of this movie. Everything felt bigger, from the sets and story to the action and humor.
  • Movies: The House by Andrew Jay Cohen 2 stars. A great cast, an okay plot, and some over-the-top shenanigans. Worth renting for a cheap laugh.
  • Movies: Baby Driver by Edgar Wright 4 stars. Though different from Wright's other movies, I loved the unique story, amazing music, and awesome action.
